Lawrence Livermore’s Paul Armstrong and Brent Stuart have been named senior members of Optica, which recognizes members who have demonstrated exemplary accomplishments in optics and photonics. Armstrong, an engineer in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Directorate, has earned multiple patents and awards for his novel instruments and processes in his 30-year career. Stuart, a scientist in the Physical and Life Sciences Principal Directorate, led a large modernization effort for redesigning and rebuilding laser beamlines as the operations manager for the Jupiter Laser Facility.

The Society for Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), the international society for optics and photonics, designated Livermore’s Zhi Liao a senior member. Liao, a laser physicist and workforce manager for NIF&PS, received the elevated status for his contributions to optics research and service to the optics community. SPIE bases this designation on professional experience and involvement with the optics and SPIE community.
