Postdoctoral researcher Rebecca Toomey has been recognized with the American Physical Society Division of Nuclear Physics’ (DNP) Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made substantial and extensive contributions to the nuclear physics community through the activities of the DNP. Through her efforts to create the first in-person, early-career social event for the DNP, Toomey has fostered important connections within the community and becomes the youngest-ever recipient of the award.
Livermore computer scientist Peter Lindstrom received a 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers VIS Test of Time Award for his 2014 paper on near-lossless data compression titled “Fixed-Rate Compressed Floating-Point Arrays.” Awardees are recognized for papers published at least 10 years earlier with a sustained impact on visualization research. Lindstrom’s paper introduced a new method for compressing numerical simulation data with high efficiency and precision, which has had a lasting impact on how scientists handle the immense data volumes that modern supercomputers produce.
