Another Innovation Celebration
Awards for innovation are not the Laboratory’s primary research and development (R&D) objective, but they do increase the visibility of new technologies while highlighting potential opportunities for partnerships, commercialization, and adoption. R&D World magazine’s annual awards recognize the top 100 scientific and technological inventions. The Laboratory has won at least one of these awards nearly every year since 1978 for a total of 182. The feature article showcases Livermore’s 2024 winners. The EXUDE (EXtreme-power Ultralow-loss Dispersive Element) Elite concentrates multiple lasers with different wavelengths into a single, high-powered beam with exceptional compactness and damage resistance. The UnifyFS software addresses a major usability factor of supercomputers by enabling application codes to gain performance advantages from distributed storage devices. Finally, the UMap memory-mapping library leverages complex memory datastores in modern supercomputers and provides an in-memory cache of large datasets.
