Lawrence Livermore certified health physicist Brooke Buddemeier has been appointed to the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board, a panel of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, providing advice on safety, security, and other aspects of radiological and nuclear technology. Buddemeier led a technical team supporting the development of 2022 and 2023 Federal Emergency Management Agency guidance related to nuclear detonation and response and has appeared in national news outlets to promote sheltering for nuclear fallout safety.


Lawrence Livermore staff scientist Gauthier Deblonde has been named a 2024 American Chemical Society Rising Star for developing techniques to understand the chemical properties of heavy elements and actinides, a family of radioactive elements. His research seeks to prevent hazards and leverage the elements’ unique properties for national security and civilian applications. Deblonde’s work was featured, with that of the other 2024 Rising Stars, in a special issue of ACS Environmental Au, a journal of the American Chemical Society.
