Each published S&TR lists patents issued for Laboratory research. The following expanded list highlights the breadth of Livermore’s scientific discoveries in honor of this issue’s spotlight on partnerships.
Partnerships are built on innovative technology and inventions that stem from mission-focused work. The 1980 Bayh–Dole Act enables universities and federally funded research and development centers, such as Lawrence Livermore, to retain intellectual property (IP) rights to discoveries arising from research activities so they can be leveraged via partnerships to increase national security and economic competitiveness. The Laboratory’s Innovation and Partnerships Office (IPO) protects Livermore IP by reviewing disclosed inventions and, as warranted, filing for patents as well as facilitating external collaborations and licenses. Patents invite collaboration such as follow-on research by institutions working in related fields and industry partnerships with companies seeking to develop commercial products or license Laboratory technology.
“Technology transfer, facilitated by IPO, enables Livermore’s award-winning research to make a tangible impact on the everyday lives of Americans,” says IPO Director Matthew Garrett. “Early-stage scientific breakthroughs can mature through collaboration and become beneficial innovations in a range of industries.”
